The truth about FREE

In the glory days of the Web, when offering free services defied the laws of economics and somehow made people into overnight millionaires, companies like Love@AOL, Yahoo personals and Excite personals had terrific sites which attracted millions of users.

The reality is, it costs a LOT of money to run dating sites (DUH!), and in the past year all the good free sites have either gone bust or now charge membership fees. Honestly, there are none left I would recommend. It was inevitable.

In my experience, the quality of profiles on free sites was much lower than those on pay sites anyway. And besides, do you really want someone who's not willing to pay the 20 bucks to find you in the first place? You decide. I think www.date-a-cheapskate.com might still be around.

The good news is dating sites are affordable, and most offer free trial periods or allow you to browse or create your ad for free. This way you don't have to commit yourself right away and you are free to sample what the site has to offer before you get out the old AMEX.
