Online dating is a fun and low-risk way to meet other singles. It’s also a great place to build great new friendships that can lead to lasting relationships. As with anything, though, there are some simple road rules you need to follow.

1. Start slow. Watch out for someone who seems too good to be true. Be on the lookout for odd behavior or inconsistencies. The person at the other end may not be who or what he/she says. Trust your instincts and back off if anything spooks you.
   
   
2. Stay anonymous. At least until you know the person better. Never include any identifying information in your profile or initial emails. If anyone pressures you for this information or tries to trick you into revealing it, block them!
   
   
3. Get a photo. My rule is this: No photo, no answer! Anyone who can't or won't take the time to send you a photo isn't worth the trouble. What are they trying to hide?
   
   
4. Talk on the phone. Before you meet, have a phone conversation. Your email lothario may not be so silver tongued in reality. You can tell a lot from someone's phone manner.
   
   
5. Meet when YOU are ready. You are never obligated to meet anyone, no matter how close you get by email. And even if you do decide to arrange a meeting, you always have the right to change your mind. When you do meet, make it a public place & tell a friend or two.
   
   
6. Watch for red flags. Are they inconsistent in things they tell you? Do they make odd excuses? Do they avoid giving direct answers to questions? Have you never met their friends or family?
   
   
7. If it's a mistake, leave. If it's just not working out, or if you feel in any way threatened, pick yourself up say thanks but no thanks.

Yes, there are losers online just like those you'll find in bars, clubs and even among the people your friends try to set you up with. But there are also lots and lots of cool, fun-loving guys & girls (and men & women) out there. All it takes to succeed in the online dating game is some patience and a little common sense.
